Rep. Cunningham recently visited her alma mater, Winston-Salem State University, one of North Carolina’s valued Historically Black Colleges and Universities. While valued, HBCUs typically receive less funding than non-HBCUs.
Rep. Cunningham is working to change that. When sports-betting legislation was introduced in North Carolina, Rep. Cunningham went to work ensuring HBCUs benefitted from the funds. Rather than securing a one-time appropriation that went to HBCUs, Rep. Cunningham negotiated a percentage of the funds to be directed to North Carolina’s HBCUs in perpetuity – forever. As the industry grows in North Carolina, so will the funding that HBCUs receive.
Rep. Carla Cunningham is always looking for ways to make things happen for her district, her community, and the state of North Carolina. It was her relationships and her commitment to collaboration that made this happen. We must continue to invest in her and support her so that she can keep working for us!
Fun fact: North Carolina has more four-year HBCUs than any other state in the country. We are also home to the largest HBCU in the country, N.C. A&T State University.
